Omo Your Plata

Classes Attended: 3 Regular, 2 Open Mat

Most the time when I sit down to write this thing, I already know what I want to write about. Sometimes I even have a rough draft for it. But this week (as well as last) I really haven't a clue. I'm just writing because this is supposed to be done weekly. And it helps me keep track of my attendance (or lack there of at times).
I've thought about talking about the actual technique we've been covering in class, but there's already a lot of blogs that do that and while they definitely serve a purpose, the few that I've read get kind of boring if you're not someone super excited about that technique. And considering most people that I know that might read this thing aren't even super excited about jiu-jitsu, why put them through the pain of reading things they won't understand. (I know no one is required to read this thing and should they find it boring they can just move onto something else, but I like to think if someone is going to click on a link here, I can at least make it somewhat entertaining for them).
Another problem I have with those sorts of blogs is that even if you are super excited about the technique being talked about, it still may not apply to your game at all. Maybe the person talking about it is having an issue with it that's completely different than an issue you may have with it. Or, as seems to more often be the case for me, the person talking about it has a completely different body type than you do so the way they go about accomplishing techniques will be different than you, especially in the details, which is really the important parts when you're working on perfecting your game.
Lastly, why read about a technique when you can look up like a dozen different videos for it on YouTube? You can find just about anything covered on YouTube now, by all sorts of different personalities with different body types. So there's really no need to strain your eyes figuring out what someone is trying to write about regarding a jiu-jitsu technique, especially when a lot of the words in that writing seem made up and read like a foreign language (which they often are).
Speaking of made up words and talking about technique, I will say that the past couple weeks we've been going over the omoplata at my gym. Which is by far my favorite submission. "Why?" you might but probably won't ask. Because it's just so damned fun to say. Try it. "O-mo-pla-ta." Some people pronounce it, "o-mo-pu-la-ta," which I guess is ok, but they're kinda cheating themselves putting in an extra syllable. (Though for all I know I'm the one saying it wrong and really it should have an extra syllable, maybe more). So there's my technique talk for the week. Hopefully I can be just as informative next week.
