Due to some stuff in my personal life, I wasn't able to make it to three regular classes this week. On the plus side, I did get to go to a seminar with Travis Stevens, so I feel like that makes up for it. Of course I'd be even happier if I did make a third regular class and the seminar, but sometimes you just have to be an adult and tend to other matters.
For those that don't know, Travis Stevens is a judo and Brazilian jiu jitsu practitioner and has one multiple medals in multiple tournaments, including a silver medal at the 2016 summer Olympics. So getting to go to a seminar he was teaching was pretty awesome for me. Unfortunately, I only signed up for one of the two sessions he was doing (an intermediate and advanced; I just signed up for the intermediate) and in retrospect I wish I'd done both. So it goes. I definitely still learned a decent amount in the session I did (the focus was arm bars) as well as got to meet and roll with people from other BJJ schools in the area, which is a very rare opportunity for me.
To be completely honest about the seminar though, it wasn't quite what I was hoping for. Don't get me wrong, as I said I'm glad I went and would easily pay to do another one with Travis Stevens, but it felt like there was something missing during the seminar, which at times made it hard to focus on what was being taught. And when you're learning from someone that's accomplished as much as Mr. Stevens has, you really want to be able to pay attention.
And of course, I had to get a picture with Mr. Stevens when the seminar was over.
